About the IIB

The Insurance Institute of Barbados is the educational arm of the general insurance industry. This non profit organization consists of both individual and corporate members employed in the general insurance industry and includes insurance companies, brokerages, agencies, and adjusting firms.

The IIB was formed on the 24th February 1976 to cater to the educational needs of persons in the industry, to establish proper educational facilities and to encourage greater cohesion and interaction among members.

The IIB offers specific courses and various seminars. The entry level course is the Certificate of Proficiency course which offers a comprehensive introduction to insurance. Successful completion of this course is required by the Office of the Supervisor of Insurance and Pensions for all persons wishing to be licensed to sell general Insurance. The Barbados Diploma of Insurance is an advanced program comprised of technical insurance and managerial courses. The Continuous Professional Development scheme was launched in 2005 and seeks to promote and encourage industry personnel to continue learning and to contribute to the development of the industry on an ongoing basis. The scheme is mainly targeted at, but not restricted to, graduates of the Barbados Diploma in Insurance. Every month the Institute conducts half day and whole day seminars of specific interest to the insurance industry.
